Walking to work last Saturday was not like no other. There was a different smell in the air – one of excitement. The stray, which is usually quiet and peaceful, was already bustling at 8am with people and food stalls getting themselves set up for the busy day ahead. The colour yellow was in abundance and the streets were closed off to traffic with steel pedestrian barriers in place. Harrogate went from a tranquil spa town in the north of Yorkshire to a vibrant hub of hustle and bustle. And why was this? The infamous Tour de France of course, which was finishing its first leg in the centre of Harrogate.
People travelled far and wide to the little town of Harrogate to be part of this momentous occasion. There were swarms of supporters lining the streets of Harrogate last Saturday, enjoying the glorious sunshine and the beautiful scenery. Everyone was in high spirits awaiting the world’s top cyclists. The local pubs and eateries were full to the brim with punters waiting in anticipation to find out who was going to win the yellow jersey. Many famous faces graced the town with their presence from the world’s most popular Royals, Wills and Kate to television personalities including George Clark from Channel 4′s Restoration Man as well as the paralympic champion, Baroness Grey Thompson.
George Clark was filming at the Turkish Baths the previous day and decided to stay in Harrogate for a few days to soak up the atmosphere. Christopher Stoner was fortunate enough to meet him whilst awaiting the cyclists to cross the finish line. He was an absolute pleasure to talk to. Christopher also enjoyed a drink with Baroness Grey Thompson later in the evening, who had thoroughly enjoyed the day.
All in all, last Saturday was a very special day – one which people will not forget in a hurry. It was one of the world’s best sporting events in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK – what more could you ask for…
