Now that’s a phrase that conjures up images of mass produced light weight ‘Elizabeth Duke’ specials.

Not this time!…

A lovely couple came in asking about our re-modelling service. The reason being that a ‘heirloom’ had been used to create the bands for their civil partnership. The yellow gold had been combined with white gold to make a pair of two colour bands.

This gold was then going to be incorporated into their new wedding bands.

The couple had been together since 1991 and had waited so long to be legally married, the ceremony was to take place in Ireland and it was important to use the Claddagh ring as a symbol of their marriage and heritage.

Claddagh Ring Meaning

“The Claddagh’s distinctive design features two hands clasping a heart, and usually surmounted by a crown. The elements of this symbol are often said to correspond to the qualities of love
(the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown).

The way that a Claddagh ring is worn on the hand is usually intended to convey the wearer’s romantic availability, or lack thereof.

Traditionally, if the ring is on the right hand with the heart facing outward and away from the body, this indicates that the person wearing the ring is not in any serious relationship, and may in fact be single and looking for a relationship: “their heart is open.”

When worn on the right hand but with the heart facing inward toward the body, this indicates the person wearing the ring is in a relationship, or that “someone has captured their heart”.
A Claddagh worn on the left hand ring finger facing outward away from the body generally indicates that the wearer is engaged.

When the ring is on the left hand ring finger and facing inward toward the body, it generally means that the person wearing the ring is married.”

The idea was to have two dynamics working together within the ring. The crowned holding section was to be one half in a matte finish. The other half was to be polished and hold the heart, almost like two jigsaw pieces locked in together. The ring had to be an ultra modern take on the original idea, a simple bold statement reflecting the yin and yang of the relationship (The groomed, highly polished element along with his ‘bit of rough!!’ sorry guys, I had to, it was too funny not to!)
